The US admits non-US educated law graduates and lawyers to certain state bar memberships if they wish to become US attorneys. Find out more on this page.
If you hold an undergraduate LLB law degree from a UK university, you may be eligible to sit for the New York Bar exam. If you are a qualified lawyer in any jurisdiction, you may be eligible to sit for the California Bar exam. Either way, BARBRI do not have a training contract/pupillage requirement.
Why Pursue the US Bar?
It’s an innovative way to distinguish yourself, meaning you will set yourself apart from your peers.
Nearly 30% of all international transactions are governed under either English or New York law, so understanding and being qualified in another jurisdiction is relevant for a truly international career.
It’s time effective – you could complete the preparatory programme in as little as 6 months.
You will also improve your employability and global career enhancement. This will increase your long-term earning potential and mark yourself as attractive to employers with this unique added-value qualification.
The Current US Bar Exam Formats
The New York Bar Exam consists of:
The 2-day Uniform Bar Exam (UBE)
Multistate Multiple Choice Questions (MBE), Essays (MEE) and Performance Test (MPT)
Online New York law course (NYLC) and exam (NYLE)
Whilst the California Bar Exam consists of:
The 2-day Uniform Bar Exam (UBE)
Multistate Multiple Choice Questions (MBE), Essays (MEE) and Performance Test (MPT)
All applicants must also take the MPRE ethics exam before or after sitting the New York Bar Exam or the California Bar Exam.
On successful completion of the exams, you are a qualified US attorney!
