Training Contracts

Each year, we offer training contracts to around 50 Law and non-law graduates. All start by completing the accelerated Legal Practice Course (LPC), with those from non-law backgrounds gaining a General Diploma in Law (GDL) too. From there, the training contract itself consists of four six-month ‘seats’, during which time trainees move between different practice areas and gain a rounded understanding of international law. For their second year, they have the chance to apply for an international or client secondment, broadening their outlook further and sharpening their commercial edge – highlighting what it means to be a real Global Game-changer.

As a firm, we tackle some of the most complex legal and commercial issues our clients face. So we look to recruit smart, collaborative and determined individuals from all kinds of backgrounds and with all kinds of experience. A strong academic record is important: you should have, or be aiming for, a good 2:1 or above in your degree. You must also be the kind of person who adapts well to new situations, delivers on their promises and has the creativity to take ideas in new directions. Above all, you must be able to work well with others and build lasting relationships with colleagues and clients alike.

You will receive comprehensive legal skills training and regular reviews. After qualification, continuous training and development will remain a priority – in fact, you will deepen your professional and business expertise throughout your career with us.

Applications open on 17 September 2018 for training contracts commencing in February and August 2021.

The application deadline for non-law students and graduates is 31 January 2019. For law students, applications will re-open between 1 June – 31 July 2019.

Vacation Schemes

Running for two to three weeks at a time in the summer and winter, our vacation schemes can be the first step towards a successful future in law. Each one is carefully tailored to different stages in your career planning, but there are certain core elements that are common to them all.

Working alongside partners, associates and trainees, you’ll get to support real, live client work in our key practice areas. You’ll draft documents, go to meetings, do legal research and, where possible, attend court. It’s hands-on learning that’s reinforced by workshops, discussions, case studies, work shadowing, social events and more. As an experience, it’s invaluable.

Our vacation schemes are open to penultimate-year students, final-year students and graduates from all degree disciplines. You should have (or expect to achieve) a good 2:1 or above. But what matters more is that you demonstrate the qualities we look for in everyone at Hogan Lovells: the ability to adapt to new surroundings, the resilience to deliver challenging work to tight deadlines and the ambition to influence change across the board. Above all, you must be confident in your ability to work well with others and build lasting relationships with colleagues and clients alike.

The application window for our summer vacation schemes (open to all penultimate and final year students, as well as graduates) is open from 17 September 2018 until 6 January 2019.

For the winter scheme (specifically for all final year students and graduates), applications open 17 September 2018 and close 31 October 2018.

Open Days

Our insight events are for first-year students of all degree disciplines. We run a series of them during spring and summer at our offices in the City. Each is packed with tailored workshops, presentations and opportunities to find out about life at a global law firm. Come along to one and, even though you’re only with us for a short space of time, you’ll leave with a better understanding of our culture and the day-to-day work of a trainee solicitor. You’ll meet colleagues from trainee to partner level and receive good advice on how to make your application for a vacation scheme or training contract stand out.

Our insight events are open to students from all degree disciplines. All you need is an open mind and a genuine desire to find out more.

Applications for our insight events close on 28 February 2019.

The events themselves take place between 10 – 11 April and 12 – 13 June 2019.
