  • Training Contracts

Our training contracts offer the perfect route into law. Over a two-year period, we’ll give you the knowledge, tools and opportunities to make a truly successful and rewarding legal career.

Whether you are based in the UK, Middle East or Asia, your training will consist of four seats of six months each. During each seat, you’ll have a supervisor who will give you regular feedback. You will also receive formal feedback through an appraisal system that takes place in the middle and at the end of each seat.

This system has been honed over a number of years to ensure that you get the most out of your time with us. Ultimately, we want to help you become the next leader in your field and hope that you’ll be part of the next generation to help drive us forward onto even greater heights.

Legal training contracts in the UK

Our UK legal training contracts give you the opportunity to experience four six-month seats over two years. At least one seat must be in a contentious area. You will also have the chance to apply for a secondment at a client office or at another Eversheds Sutherland office in the UK or internationally.

You won’t simply be given a conventional development path: you’ll work closely with your supervisor to identify and build on your strengths – and we’ll talk to you about how you see your future evolving. We recommend trying as many seats as possible but if there’s one you really want to experience, we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer. As you might expect, our aim is to retain every trainee on qualification.

Legal training contracts in the Middle East

The Middle East training programme allows you to focus your technical skills in multiple practice groups as you rotate through four six-month seats, predominantly in the Middle East but culminating in qualification in England & Wales.

You’ll also take part in a full programme of personal and commercial development skills training including finance and business, communication, presenting, business writing, client care, professional standards and advocacy. Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer in the Middle East.

Legal training contracts in Hong Kong

Our Hong Kong training contracts consist of four seats of six months each over two years across Litigation, Banking, Corporate and a secondment to one of our overseas offices.

As with all our training contracts, you’ll be fully supported throughout to ensure your career develops in the way you want it to. Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer. Historically, every Hong Kong Eversheds trainee has been offered a permanent position on qualification.

    Apprenticeships

Our legal apprenticeship scheme offers a paid alternative to the traditional route of qualifying to become a solicitor. Please consider the following questions carefully:

    • do you want to become a solicitor?
    • are you unsure if you want to go to university?
    • could you learn better by actually doing something?
    • would you like to start earning a salary?

If you’ve answered yes to the above, our Level Seven Solicitor Apprenticeship may be the right option for you. Offered in conjunction with the BPP University Law school, it gives apprentice lawyers the chance to qualify as a solicitor following a six-year programme of work-based learning and part-time study. At the end of the apprenticeship you will have completed everything to qualify as a solicitor and be awarded an LLB in Legal Practice.

The benefits of our legal apprenticeship scheme

This apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to qualify as a solicitor whilst earning a salary, rather than paying the tuition fees required for full-time study. It also represents a chance to forge a long-term career at one of the world’s largest law practices while receiving an outstanding range of benefits including:

    • competitive starting salary of £18,600 in London and £16,000 outside London
    • 26 days annual leave
    • employee recognition scheme
    • discounted gym membership
    • pension scheme
    • subsidised staff restaurants on site
    • interest-free season ticket loans
    • private medical insurance

How does our apprentice lawyer scheme work?

Our legal apprenticeship training is delivered by BPP University Law School.

Eversheds Sutherland will support you with paid time off to attend classes together and assessments. By the end of the six-year programme, if you have passed the BPP University assessments you will get an LLB degree. You will also gain further Masters Level Seven credits which can be used towards an LLM or masters at BPP University.

In the workplace, you will carry out supervised work-based learning in order to meet the SRA’s competence statement and will produce a work-based assessment portfolio. In addition to examinations throughout the apprenticeship, there will also be an SRA centralized assessment that you will need to pass to qualify as a solicitor.

What will you study on the legal apprenticeship programme?

Our legal apprenticeship scheme includes a range of modules online and face-to-face, covering the subjects currently required by a qualifying law degree as well as vocational practice areas and skills.

The modules you will study will be based upon those modules which typically make up a law degree such as introduction to practice, English legal systems and research, contract law, public law, criminal law, tort law, land law and equity and trusts. You will also study those modules which typically make up the Legal Practice Course such as business law and practice, property, litigation, wills and administration of estates.

Our apprentices study for one day a week with BPP. This is currently a Monday. The learning is mostly interactive e-learning with other apprentices. Every three weeks, our apprentices attend their local BPP centre to have a day of face-to-face skills sessions.

Throughout the six-year programme, our apprentices will complete a portfolio of work. This will show their development throughout the six-year programme.

    Diversity Opportunities

    Eversheds Sutherland Unlocked

What does a career in law involve? What’s the difference between a barrister and a solicitor? What would I do day to day? Am I good enough? Should I go to university or do an apprenticeship? Who can I talk to?

Have you asked yourself some or all of these questions? If so, then our Unlocked Programme is right for you.

This innovative programme is aimed at students who have academic potential and an interest in law, but who may believe that a legal career is out of their reach. We’re here to prove that it isn’t.

It is aimed at state school students in their first year of A-Levels, with mainly GCSE 9 – 6/A* – B grades, little or no family history of higher education and a genuine interest in law – and lots of enthusiasm.

You see, we’re passionate about opening up legal careers to the best and brightest young minds – especially students, like you, who may not share the typical background of most legal professionals.

You attend a state school, for example. You may be the very first person in your family destined to go to university. You could come from a disadvantaged community.

Over the course of three days spent at one of our offices, you will engage in a range of different activities to help you think about the actions you need to take to get to where you want to be in your career, both in the short term and the long term.

    The programme will:

    • Dispel myths about what it’s like to work in a major law firm.
    • Give you the chance to interact with current apprentices, trainees, partners, clients and barristers.
    • Explore the benefits of setting ambitious but achievable goals.
    • Offer advice on different ways of entering a firm.
    • Support you with one-to-one coaching sessions.
    • Help you develop non-academic strengths such as communication skills.

In short, Eversheds Sutherland Unlocked will actively engage you, inform you and inspire you to start your journey into law, whichever route you decide to take.

It’s informative. It’s interesting. It’s useful. And, most importantly, it’s fun. So why not get some brilliant experience and explore what a law career looks like from the inside out?

    You should:

    • attend a state (non-fee paying) school; and
    • be in Year 12; and
    • be or have been eligible for free school meals (or where this information is difficult or sensitive to obtain, the participant attends a school that is significantly above the regional average in terms of number of students eligible for free school meals); and
    • be of the first generation in their immediate family to attend university.

The programme runs in Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham and the next dates will be in February/April 2020 depending on location.
