Training Contracts

We welcome applications from exceptional individuals, those who are capable of taking the initiative, who have strong interpersonal and organisational skills and can rise to the challenge of working directly with partners within small, focused teams and having client contact early in their careers.

Trainees rotate around four six-month seats with opportunity to spend time in corporate, finance, dispute resolution, employment, tax, competition and funds. We also expect to be able to offer secondments to an overseas office of the firm, and with a client.

Trainees share a room with a partner or senior associate, and work with them on their matters, whilst also having the opportunity to work with the other lawyers in the firm. Gibson Dunn is proud to have a strong, sustained commitment to pro bono work, and our trainees are encouraged to participate in this tradition and work on local and international pro bono activities.

Vacation Schemes

• 8-26 July 2019 (three weeks)

• Pay: £500 per week

Our summer vacation scheme is intended for both law students and students of other disciplines in their penultimate and final year of study, recent graduates (in any discipline), and those already taking a GDL or LPC course.  Scheme participants have the opportunity to take part in seminars and workshops, as well as perform meaningful work on the firm’s high-profile matters.  We also hold a number of social events and activities to give you an opportunity to enjoy yourself and to get to know your fellow vacation scheme students and those working at the firm.

Gibson Dunn strongly encourages candidates interested in a training contract to apply for a place on our summer vacation scheme, rather than directly for a training contract. To date, the majority of our trainees have been recruited from our summer vacation scheme.

Early application is advised as places will be allocated on a rolling basis.

In 2018 we were awarded the “Best Work Placement Scheme – City Firm” award by LawCareers.Net.

Gibson Dunn offers a General Open Day to provide an insight into life at a top international law firm. The day is packed with seminars, talks and interactive workshops, including partner panel sessions introducing you to the practice areas of the firm. It also includes an opportunity to meet our partners, associates and trainees informally over lunch and evening drinks.

Applications are welcome from law students in their penultimate year of study, students of other disciplines in their final year of study, those who have already graduated (in any discipline) and those who are already studying on their GDL or LPC course. Priority will be given to those who are considering starting a training contract with the firm in September 2022.

First Year Insight Day: April 2020

Our First Year Insight Day is packed with informative sessions to help you understand what it is like to work in a commercial law firm, including a partner panel session, a commercial awareness workshop, a Q&A with our trainees and some invaluable tips on interviews and application forms as well as how to distinguish between different law firm cultures.

Applications are welcome from law students in their first year of undergraduate study and students of other disciplines in their first or second year of study. The First Year Insight Day is designed for those at the early stages of researching a legal career.

Diversity Opportunities

We host two work experience schemes in partnership with PRIME and Speakers4Schools.

PRIME is an alliance of law firms and legal departments across the UK that has committed to offer work experience to young people from less privileged backgrounds who might otherwise not have the opportunity to access careers in the legal world.  PRIME’s members are actively trying to ensure that anyone who wants to enter the world of law has an equal chance to do so, regardless of their background.  http://www.primecommitment.org/

Speakers4Schools is a charity that arranges for experts and leaders in their field to visit state schools and provide inspirational insights, as well as work experience placements, opening up the wealth of top opportunities available to state-educated students.  You can read more about Speakers4Schools here: https://www.speakers4schools.org/.
