CILEx Courses – CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

Unless you have completed a law degree or a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice  is the first of the CILEx courses you will undertake on your path to qualification as a chartered legal executive. It can be commenced on completion of either GCSEs, A-Levels or a non-law degree.

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma usually lasts for two years. It is a broad-based, practical introduction to law and legal practice. It requires students to study key areas of law and legal practice. The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma is ‘unitised’ and compulsory law units include:

Whilst all students must undertake the compulsory core units they also undertake three elective units which reflect their main areas of interest, such as:

NB: In order for a Practice unit to be counted as ‘unit’ towards the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma, individuals must take the linked ‘law’ unit.

The qualification also includes a professional legal skills component. Professional skills units including:

require that students demonstrate key transferable legal skills in practical situations.

The qualification therefore consists of ten units in total which are each assessed by CILEx and accumulated by the student. Each unit is regarded as a worthwhile achievement in its own right and certification is available at unit level.

This unit approach to study allows students to adopt a flexible and tailor-made approach to learning, which may involve either pure academic focused study or a combination of study and work based learning.

CILEx Courses – CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice

The CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice is the second of the CILEx Courses. It is the final academic stage towards qualifying as a chartered legal executive. You can study at your own pace, but the qualification normally takes around two years to complete.

Building on the CILEx Level 3 Diploma in Law and Practice (above), students are required to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the law and practice in three specific areas, such as:

For one of these law areas, the candidate must also demonstrate a sound practical understanding of the legal ‘practice’ that arises from the law, including:

The candidate must also demonstrate the required level of underpinning professional legal skills by undertaking two mandatory professional skills units, including:

In summary, to pass the CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice you must complete:

  1. One ‘practice’ unit plus its linked law unit
  2. Any other 2 law units
  3. Both professional skills units.

CILEx Courses – Graduate Fast Track Diploma (CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Legal Practice)

The CILEx Graduate Fast-track Diploma (CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Legal Practice) is for law degree and Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) graduates who want to qualify as lawyers without undertaking the more traditional Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) routes. There is also no requirement to secure a training contract or pupillage when taking the CILEx courses. Instead of qualifying as a solicitor or barrister, graduates qualify and practise as chartered legal executive lawyers.

Increasingly on a level playing field with solicitors, chartered legal executive lawyers can now become judges, coroners, advocates and partners in law firms.

Graduate Fast Track Diploma CILEx courses can be studied full time, part time or via distance learning, leaving you free to work in legal practice and gain the necessary qualifying employment to become a chartered legal executive lawyer and a CILEx Fellow.

You can enrol and study at a CILEx accredited centre, each of which sets its own course fees.

The qualification is comprised of two CILEx Level 6 practice subjects, listed above (one of which must relate to a subject you studied within your law degree or GDL), and the CILEx Level 6 Client Care Skills unit.
