Absolutely look for work experience at solicitor firms. Start by sending your CV and a cover letter to any local law firms in your area, to gain a little bit of insight into what it’s like to be a solicitor. Take a look at this article for some insight on what to include in a cover letter: https://www.thelawyerportal.com/2018/01/11/law-cover-letter-work-experience/
The best conference you can come to is our own Law Apprenticeship Conference (which you can find if you hover over ‘Events’ in the navigation bar!), where you will have the opportunity to network with huge, nationwide law firms and ask them in person what is the best way to stand out. It’s completely free to book, and we will be running a number of workshops throughout the day, from how to make your CV stand out to what law firms look for in candidates.
The final thing you can do in the meantime while you wait for the conference is keep nurturing your interest in legal affairs. A lot of apprenticeship interviews will revolve around your passion for law, and may well ask your opinion on various world happenings that have an impact on the legal industry. For a quick starting place, take a look at our Legal Hot Topics 2018 page, which you can find if you hover over the Free Guides tab.
I hope this helps – let me know if you have any further questions 🙂
