Training Contracts

A training contract lasts two years. As a trainee, you would be posted to four different teams around the firm – we call these ‘seats’ and each seat lasts six months. We will work with you to understand the areas of law that you are particularly interested, and will try to help you get the seats that best match your career aspirations. Our priority though is to make sure you receive the balanced training that you need to qualify as a lawyer.

At the start of each seat, you’ll be assigned a supervisor who – as well as giving you work – is responsible for mentoring you, and for providing training and feedback on how you are doing. You will have two appraisals with your supervisor in each seat – half way through and at the end to make sure that in addition to regular informal catch-ups, you have opportunity to discuss your objectives and what is expected of you.

As well as technical legal training, we also provide you with the skills you need to succeed commercially. This includes presenting, negotiating, workload management, business development, client relationship management and networking.

The sort of seats you’ll choose from are charities, corporate, divorce and family, private client and tax, litigation and arbitration and real estate as well as possible postings with international teams.

Applications for our 2021 Training Contracts will close on 31 July 2019. The link to apply can be found here:

Vacation Schemes

The best way to get a feel for the firm and the type of work we do is to come and work with us for two weeks on one of our vacation schemes.

We have 18 places in total and offer three dates for our two-week vacation scheme in our London office.

The 2019 Vacation Scheme dates are as follows:
1 – 12 April
17-28 June
1-12 July

We are proud of our vacation scheme as it offers a real insight into what it is like to work for a City law firm and most importantly you will gain first-hand experience of what it is like to work for Withers by experiencing some of our core practice areas.

Candidates on the vacation scheme receive £350 per week and benefit from free meals and snacks in the firm’s café.

Open Days

If you are a first year law student interested in working at Withers, our open day is a great opportunity to come and meet us and see what life working here is like.

Bear in mind that not all law firms are the same. An open day is a real chance to hear about some areas of law you may be less familiar with, get a taste of why we have appeared for five years in a row on the top 100 employers (by The Sunday Times) and discover why our associates are deemed to be some of the happiest in the legal profession (according to Legal Week).

You will be given an insight into the breadth of our international client base, the drivers behind our ambitious global expansion and the wide ranging opportunities available for trainees and qualified lawyers alike.

The day runs from 10:00 until approximately 14:00 and lunch will be provided. We will also reimburse reasonable travel expenses. The open day is held in our London office.

Apprenticeships

Our Solicitor Apprenticeship is suited to individuals who are passionate about inspiring confidence and building relationships with colleagues and clients.

It can, at times, be demanding and fast paced so you will need to be an efficient and detail-oriented person who can prioritise, multi-task and remain calm under pressure.

The role involves supporting the operational functioning of the firm whilst learning and developing the key skills and experience required for a solicitor. Our solicitor apprentices are involved in many of the day to day tasks of a trainee lawyer whilst rotating amongst different practice groups. The apprenticeship includes one day per week allocated to study at BPP.

Throughout the six-year programme you will take exams and assessments to meet the requirements of the LLB degree in Legal Practice and Solicitors Regulation Authority’s (SRA) centralised assessments. All university fees will be funded by the firm.
